People in the Sun

I wonder if a thousand writers for The Sunday Times wrote a column they would be able to come up with anything not-elitist and pretentious.

Personal blogs have the potential to teach the main-stream that each individual has a story, while political blogs already do a better job at holding politicians accountable than newspapers do. Yes, there are many of us out there, and yes, we sometimes don't know what we're talking about, but I'd rather read an honest blog post about nothing at all than an editor-approved review of the latest cultural craze. The Times can't decide what I think about anymore--this power now belongs to Google Reader.

new illuminati

I've been a journalist, editor and publisher. Writers are people, nothing more - any pretentions to authority held by publishers are generally based upon an ignorance of the fears and favours that drive their business; no publishers run eclectic libraries and all have their own agenda.
But of course they lay claim to greater credibility than the average Joe - why else would people pay them for something that emerges from their minds?
It's all about money and social standing - not TRUTH.
Fear of retribution and legal action utterly stifles the mediated media.
Long live the free web! We all need to research for ourselves and make up our own minds about issues.

Keen's perspective is interesting and to some extent has some validity. Blogs are not meant to be the one stop shop for news. Blogs do extend the reach of the news and gives an incredible voice to the masses. As with everything you read, one must weigh the intent of what is written against the facts which are available.

The web seems to me to be a mix of vanity, anarchy and democracy. We are discovering new freedoms here--to connect, reach out, share, and even influence.

But we have not yet finished distinguishing between solid, verifiable facts and expert opinions AND everyday people talking about things they haven't really studied any more than the next guy.

When that happens, the Internet will really come into its own.

Amen brother! I also enjoy different people's takes on the life. How do they deal with everyday things and monumnetal things?

Secret Simon

Thanks for all your comments and a special welcome to those who are writing here for the first time! Just to pick up on new illuminati's point about lack of eclecticism, when I was learning how to write submission letters to editors for my fiction, I was phased to discover that I was supposed to compare my work to that of other writers: "this book has the breakneck pace of writer A together with the wit and observation of writer B" that kind of thing. But to my horror, I found I'd written a novel that wasn't like anything else! So what was I supposed to write in the covering letter? There was clearly no way that this was ever going to sell. If I ever write another novel, I think I'm going to work out who I'm like before I start. That way, I won't make the same mistake again.

Seriously though, I think it is very hard for any artistic effort which doesn't fit into a specific marketing category to make it in the mainstream marketplace today. I'd be willing to bet that a truly original blog, on the other hand, has a lot more chance of success.

Some Favorite Quotes

  • "The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass through this world. There will most likely be no ticker-tape parades for us, no monuments created in our honor. But that does not lessen our possible impact, for there are scores of people waiting for someone like us to come along - people who will appreciate our compassion, our encouragement, who will need our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give. Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. It is overwhelming to consider the numerous opportunities there are to make our love felt." - Leo Bascaglia
  • "Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm." - Sir Winston Churchill
  • "My life has been filled with terrible misfortunes, most of which never happened." - Michel de Montaigne
  • "Take any fear. Call it out. Actually make an appointment: I'll meet you face to face to get this settled once and for all at 'such-n-such' time. Tell it you'll even meet it in its own space: a dark room. And you'll find nothing will ever come to meet you..." - Sue Ann Edwards
  • "Your mind is the interference to experiencing the bliss of this moment." - Dr Joe Vitale
  • "A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive." - Albert Einstein
