To help you find your way around The Secret Of Life, here are some brief descriptions of the most popular posts. If you find them useful or have something to say, please feel free to leave a comment, even on the older posts - it's always good to get feedback!
(You can also search the site by using the category cloud or the archive list, which are both in the sidebar. You can also use the Search box, though please note that unfortunately this only searches the main posts, not the comments.)
The posts are listed (roughly) according to date, with the most recent ones first:
The Oneness Temple describes a remarkable project to assist in the transformation of human consciousness.
We Have The Biology has a link to a wonderful video by neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor, in which she describes her observations of the working of her brain while undergoing a stroke - followed by my own thoughts on the significance of her experience.
The Ultimate Truth series is all about the remarkable implications of total acceptance. Here's your path to freedom....
The Ultimate Truth - 1 explains why acceptance is always an option, even when you can't accept what's happening in your life.
The Ultimate Truth 2 - Into The Jaws Of The Tiger suggests that accepting your emotions is the best way to be free of them.
The Ultimate Truth 3 - Breathe Away Your Emotions talks you through a practical technique for the acceptance and release of your emotions.
The Ultimate Truth 4 - Living Fearlessly explains why releasing emotions is so important - and how it can lead to a life of ultimate freedom.
Acceptance And Friendship contains a link to a talk by Eckhart Tolle which echoes what I've been talking about in the Ultimate Truth series.
Not Between You And Them... contains some wonderful words by Mother Teresa. If you feel you are not appreciated, take a look at this post...
Eckhart, Oprah.... And A Giraffe and Eckhart, An Update... And This Time It's A Dolphin have comments and links relating to the Eckhart Tolle - Oprah Winfrey series of webcasts, plus numerous other things including a link to the remarkable 'giraffe test'.
How Much Do We Really Know? asks if we really know what we think we know - and considers the relative merits of logic, published research, and intuition.
The 'Left Brain - Right Brain' Dancer: This seems to be just about my most popular post. After some initial gnashing of teeth about my personal situation (why did I put that in there?) we get down to the important part: a remarkable graphic of a rotating dancer who seems to change direction according to the way your brain is working (or does she?) It's worth taking a look at the comments to check out what other people have seen...
Gateways Of Light: an impressive video about planetary transformation.
Philip Pullman - A Process Of Evolution asks if the views of Philip Pullman (the 'secular' author of His Dark Materials) are really so far from ideas we discuss in this blog.
Retail Heaven And Hell points out that not only do we buy too much stuff, we don't even enjoy doing it. If we must be consumers, why can't we be happy consumers?
Emotional Freedom Technique may help to deal with 'negative' emotions.
A Sun-Filled Room: The importance of connecting to the natural sense of joy which is available to us all. How can we make that connection?
Manitonquat's Prayer: A Native American's vision of a braver, better future.
Unresolved Issues: How do we learn to accept things the way they are? The work of Byron Katie may provide an answer.
Earth Doomed! (see page 53): The title here is an ironic comment on the under-reporting in certain media of a UN report on the global environment, which prompted me to speculate that only a global change in human consciousness will be enough to get us out of our current difficulties.
The Heart Of The Secret series describes what I believe to be the most valuable elements of the best-selling DVD, The Secret.
Part 1 - Intention And Acceptance investigates whether 'acceptance of what is' can be compatible with the law of attraction.
Part 2 - Walk Before You Run! is a post for beginners (like you and me!) about how to use the law of attraction.
Part 3 - Contemplating Perfection explores a law of attraction technique which is particularly useful for working on your health.
Part 4 - Gratitude explores the power of gratitude and discusses its importance in relationships.
As a postscript, here's an amusing example of the law of attraction in action: Foreign Bodies.
By way of a change from our usual subject matter, Harry Potter And The Holy Trinity investigates the use of Christian imagery in the Harry Potter books.
Consciousness Animation and Cartoon Time: links to some interesting graphical interpretations of the ideas on this blog.
An End To All Abuse was written for 'Blogging For Hope Day' and suggests that what is needed to stop abuse is nothing less than a wholesale change in consciousness. What might such a change be like? I have tried to answer this with a guided visualization which you can read or listen to online.
How Does It Feel To Win A Million? and the follow-up post, Ripples On A Sea Of Peace, are all about 'acceptance'. Could this be the cornerstone of enlightenment?
Making Plans: Is it possible to 'live in the moment' (as suggested by Eckhart Tolle) and also plan for the future?
Natural Focus is all about meditating out in nature.
In The Zone: When sports people are having a good day, they say they are 'in the zone'. Everything seems easy and effortless, and all the moves they make are exactly right. But what if we could live all our lives the same way?
How To Slow Down Time: There are all sorts of reasons to live in the moment, to focus on what is really going on instead of being lost in our thoughts. But could one of them be to 'slow down time' and allow us to live subjectively longer lives?
The Elusive Truth: Is Web 2.0 a communication revolution or the source of a deluge of bad art and inaccurate information? (Guess which side I'm on...)
Quantum Light Breath is a very powerful breathing exercise which is an excellent way to release suppressed emotions. The related post A Taste Of Enlightenment? tells of an extraordinary experience I had after using the QLB.
The Call Of The Dark is an anecdotal piece about our human addiction to drama. It doesn't have to be like this - we don't have to suffer.
Practical Philosophy: An introduction to courses in Practical Philosophy worldwide. These courses deal with a lot of the same ideas as are discussed in The Secret Of Life.
Positive Thinking For Beginners: Some thoughts on Rhonda Byrne's The Secret and the law of attraction. The later post The Secret Antidote provides a link to a critique of The Secret, with my response (and those of other readers) appearing in the comments.
The Ultimate Purpose Of Life?: So what we doing here? You might have though the answer was 42, but I have an alternative explanation. (Notice the all-important question mark - no claims of omniscience here.)
Deeksha (otherwise known as The Oneness Blessing) is an incredible source of energy which is claimed to transform our consciousness. This post tells you more about Deeksha, including details on where to receive it worldwide. Receiving Deeksha Through Music is a follow-up post about an interesting new CD, the aim of which is to give Deeksha to all who hear it.
Feeling What Is: This is my description of how it feels to 'be in the moment'. It's probably the closest I've come to the ultimate post "What is the secret of life?"
Conversations With God: Along with Eckhart Tolle's Practicing The Power Of Now, Conversations With God Book 1 by Neale Donald Walsch is the most important book in my life. I read it and thought "Thank God - the truth at last!" This post is a brief introduction to the books. The follow-up post, Changes, deals with some ideas from Walsch's subsequent book, Home With God.
Special Green Plates: Unlike some of my other posts, this one doesn't have a Google ranking (no one searches for 'special green plates', I guess!) but it seemed to get comments from more people than any other post I've ever done. It's all about a dream I had, and it seemed to touch a chord with a lot of people. Stringing It All Together is about a similar experience I had in my waking life.
How To Deal With Difficult Emotions is a very practical post, describing Nick Roach's technique for dissolving away unwanted emotions. The later post How To Deal With Difficult Emotions - 2 describes another technique (about labeling emotions) which has been shown to be effective by a study at UCLA.
Waking Up is my description of what may lie behind the dream we call reality. Wake up and smell the coffee...
Thinking Outside The Illusion is my analysis of a discussion on God vs Science which appeared in Time Magazine. In the believers' corner, geneticist Francis Collins - and in the opposing corner, that arch-unbeliever Richard Dawkins, author of The God Illusion. (You can find a bit more about this in another post, Richard Dawkins - 2)
Nameless, Taking The Lid Off, and Taking The Lid Off - 2 is a series of posts which deals with dropping preconceptions about what we can see. It describes an interesting practical exercise which some might find rather wacky. As close as The Secret Of Life gets to hugging a tree...
What The Bleep Do We Know?: This post presents my thoughts on this movie about the interface between science and spirituality - with particular reference to the review on Wikipedia.
The Nature Of The Universe: More about science and spirituality. Einstein suggested that we are really all one - but can this be proven by science?
Vision recounts my historic meeting with Prime Minister Tony Blair. But was I meeting him or only meeting myself?
Unity Is Powerful, Let's Pretend, and To Simply Be: a series of posts which explores the idea, as suggested by Einstein, that we are all one: that the idea of separateness is 'an optical illusion of the mind'.
The Need To Be Right: Most of us have this need, but why? Why do we feel the need to be right all the time?
The Image Within and Disorientation deal with the obsession which most of us have about how other people perceive us.
What If I Lose This? and How To Have It All explain why the law of attraction is not always easy to use to our advantage.
Yabba Dabba Do and All The Colours are early posts which provide some tips about how to be in the moment.
The A-Z Of Simon and The Fifth Cowboy are personal pieces about the author of this blog. Find out about Harrogate, cowboy gangs, and xenon...
And finally, by way of light relief, Changing The Bed, Halloween, The Revenge Of The Slime Monster and A Virtual Tour provide some (hopefully) amusing insights into life at The Secret Of Life HQ.
